What is an online DICOM viewer?

A DICOM viewer interprets medical imaging files and displays their pixel data with controls that are not available in a normal photo viewer. A browser-based viewer provides those controls through a web application, without requiring a desktop viewer installation.

DICOM files can contain images from modalities such as CT, MR, computed radiography, and digital X-ray. Compatibility still depends on the file's encoding and pixel data; a .dcm filename alone does not guarantee that a file will render.

What MedImages currently does

• Accepts authenticated uploads up to 4 MB and validates the DICOM Part 10 signature on the server.
• Stores uploaded images in the user's image list so they can be reopened later.
• Displays one selected image at a time using a Cornerstone3D stack viewport.
• Shows a focused metadata summary, including patient name, study description, modality, dimensions, and window values when present.
• Exports the currently rendered view as a PNG image.

Main viewer controls

Window width and center can be changed by dragging, or by selecting CT and MR presentation presets such as Lung, Bone, Soft Tissue, Brain, and FLAIR. The toolbar also provides zoom, pan, 90-degree rotation, horizontal and vertical flip, color inversion, and reset controls.

These controls change how the image is presented in the viewport. They do not edit the original DICOM file stored by MedImages.

Typical workflow

1. Create an account or sign in.
2. Open the workspace and select one or more DICOM Part 10 files.
3. Choose an uploaded image from the image list.
4. Adjust windowing, zoom, pan, orientation, or inversion as needed.
5. Open the inspector for available metadata or export the displayed view as PNG.

Browser and device considerations

MedImages relies on modern browser file APIs, canvas rendering, and WebGL-based imaging libraries. A current desktop browser and a larger screen provide the most practical workspace for mouse-driven windowing, zoom, and pan. Rendering speed and memory use vary with the device, browser, and DICOM encoding.

Current limitations

• The server accepts files no larger than 4 MB.
• The workspace displays one file at a time; it is not a complete study or series management system.
• Only a selected set of metadata fields is shown, not every tag in the data set.
• There are no measurement, annotation, report, or public-sharing tools in the current product.
• Some transfer syntaxes, compressed pixel data, multiframe objects, or non-Part 10 files may not open.
